North West Set For Carbon Challenge

A new £4 million fund to boost renewable energy projects across rural parts of North West England is scheduled to start later this month.

The Northwest Regional Development Agency’s Rural Carbon Challenge Fund is being provided as part of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

It will offer grants ranging between £200,000 and £500,000 to improve the competitiveness of the region’s agricultural and forestry sectors, enhance rural quality of life and community facilities, and encourage a more diverse rural economy.

Social enterprises, community groups, charities, micro-enterprises and rural businesses will be able to apply for support to carry out projects including:

  • Installing renewable energy systems in community buildings.
  • Setting up or expanding a rural renewable energy business.
  • Providing training and support for people designing and installing micro-renewable installations, such as fitters, plumbers and heating engineers.
  • Providing training and information to encourage community groups and charities to take part in renewable energy projects.
  • Exploring the feasibility of carrying out renewable energy projects locally.
  • Demonstration of best practice.

The scheme will be run on NWDA’s behalf by consultancy Envirolink Northwest in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust.

Application forms and further information will be available to download in due course at the Envirolink Northwest website (opens a new window)
